Papanasini is a holy mountain stream which flows from the Brahmagiri Hills accessible around 1 km northwest of the Thirunelli temple premises. On your way to Papanasini from the Thirunelli temple, there is a small bridge and once you cross this bridge, you will reach a small Gundika temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
One dip in the cold Papanasini stream is believed to wash away all sins committed in a lifetime. The name Papanasini means “destroyer of all sins”.
It is further believed that Papanasini is the confluence of the rivers Ganges and Saraswathy. Devotees visit this place to bathe in the stream to relieve from all sins.
